This classic Southern buttermilk coleslaw is the ultimate balance of creamy and vinegary, vibrant and crisp, sweet, salty, and tangy. Perfect for sandwiches and wraps, barbecues and picnics, and the best buddy to your comfort food favorites. Comes together in seconds and ideal for making ahead. For me, perfect coleslaw means plenty of vinegar, no mayonnaise overload. It’s light yet creamy enough to hold together, salty and sweet, and extra tangy. Hence, buttermilk for the ideal consistency and flavor.
With a ready-to-go bag of julienned cabbage and carrots, it’s just a matter of mixing!
- 1/4 cup buttermilk
- 1.5 Tbsp plain Greek yogurt
- 1/2 Tbsp mayo
- 1.5 Tbsp apple cider vinegar
- 1/2 tsp Dijon
- 1.5 tsp lemon juice
- 2 tsp sugar
- 1/4 – 1/2 tsp sea salt (to taste)
- ground black pepper, to taste
Whisk the dressing, then stir in 10 oz slaw mix. Seal and refrigerate until ready to serve. The flavors will marry and make it even more delicious after a few hours or longer. The really fun part is how to serve the coleslaw. It is the perfect side dish at every picnic and barbecue, and it is a Southern staple that complements all of the classics. Also try it directly on cold sandwiches, wraps, pulled BBQ sandwiches, and burgers (such as this pimento cheese chicken burger) for a dynamite flavor upgrade from lettuce. (crispy pretzel-crusted buttermilk chicken with hot honey; roasted garlic, cheddar, and chive buttermilk biscuit; coleslaw)
