Juicy chicken, smoky BBQ sauce, crisp bacon, melty cheese, tangy pickle, creamy avocado, and some tomato, onion, and spinach to finish it off. Yep, so basically all the best classics piled between hearty bread and grilled up to toasty perfection. I’m not sure exactly why, but this sandwich just FEELS like an all-American deal.
Plus you get KILLER flavor and amazing texture without excess grease or an overload on calories (which actually does not define American food). You don’t even have to go outside to grill. Of course you can if you want, but a grill pan (or any skillet) works perfectly for this, and for me is sooooo much more convenient.
The All-American Grilled Chicken Sandwich
Notes
*My favorites are Stubb's Original and Woodstock. Both have incredible flavor, just the right amount of kick, and aren't overly thick with sugar.
Ingredients
- 2 oz boneless skinless chicken breast
- salt/pepper
- 1 slice turkey bacon
- 2 slices whole grain bread
- 1/2 Tbsp BBQ sauce*
- 0.5 oz sliced sharp cheddar
- thinly sliced dill pickle
- thinly sliced red onion
- ~3 grape tomatoes, thinly sliced length-wise
- couple leaves spinach (opt.)
- 12g ripe avocado
- 1/4 tsp minced garlic (opt.)
Instructions
- Lightly grease grill pan or skillet and heat over medium. Sprinkle chicken with a pinch salt and pepper. Add chicken and bacon to pan and cook on each side until done (about 5 min per side for the chicken; bacon until crisp). Remove from pan. When cool enough, roughly tear chicken and bacon with your hands.
- Spread BBQ sauce on one slice of bread. Top with chicken, bacon, sliced cheese, pickle, onion, tomato, and spinach. On the other slice of bread, mash avocado with minced garlic and spread evenly. Place avocado-side-down to form sandwich.
- Bring grill pan/skillet back to medium heat. Add sandwich and gently press down with a sandwich press (shown above) or another skillet. After ~2 minutes, flip and press again, until bread is toasted and cheese is melted.
- Enjoy!
